4. PROFESSION AND CERTIFICATION
Profession as a Software Engineer may still seem strange in the ears of Indonesia. Most of the people of Indonesia may be more familiar with the title Information Technology Experts, Information Systems Analyst, Programmer, Operator or the other term. This is because of confusion about the term software engineer as described in earlier chapters. But in the advanced countries in the field of information technology, Software Engineer term more often used.
Certification of competence in the field of software engineering, is still a debate among experts and software providers. Most of the certifications in the software industry is usually very specific to certain software. For example, software companies such as Redhat Linux Inc., Adobe Inc.., Oracle, or Microsoft, providing certification to the person's ability to master the software it produces.
ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) has held a certification program for Software Engineer in the 1980s, but discontinued due to lack of interest. IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) has issued more than 500 professional certificate software. In Canada, has issued a legal certificate for RPL-called ISP (Information Systems Professional).
Currently, certification for RPL in Indonesia is also not yet available, but has been prepared in Indonesia's National Work Competence Standards for Computer Programmer. Although not meet the coverage area of RPL as a whole, but most can not be used as an approach to the field of software engineering certification.
